Denialism will be the death of us

It is frustrating that people would rather accuse experts of lying than acknowledge the existence of a major issue. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump once again dismissed Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) as a hoax after a report warning that unless we take action to mitigate it and soon, the very existence of humanity will be imperilled.
I do not need to be convinced. Last month, Gauteng sweltered under another heatwave.
The official definition of a heatwave is five or more consecutive days during which the daily maximum temperature in an area surpasses the average monthly maximum temperature of that area by 5 °C (9 °F) or more. By definition, heatwaves should be very rare events. Yet over the last seven years, Gauteng has suffered multiple heatwaves. It is ludicrous to deny that AGW is not occurring. It is also folly to insist that all is well when clearly all is not well. In Lebanon, cedars are dying en masse as a beetle that attacks them is increasing in numbers thanks to the climate warming. The wildfire season in Australia has been uncommonly vicious this year. 2017 was the hottest year on record and 2018 looks to beat that record. Most of the hottest years on record have occurred in the 21st century.
AGW is happening, and unless we act, the costs in both lives and money will be huge.
